Croatia Records 12.38 Million Tourist Arrivals
Last Updated on 31 August 2026
Croatia recorded 59.13 million overnight stays in the first half of 2026. This marked a 1.1% increase in arrivals when compared to the same period last year. Tourism contributes 26% to Croatia’s GDP.
The Adriatic Coast is The Most Popular Destination
The Adriatic Coast captured 56.1 million overnight stays. Mainland Croatia accounted for 3 million. Out of the people who visited, 10.3 million came from Germany, 6.7 million came from Slovenia, and 4.3 million came from Austria. Top regions include Istria, which had 8.7 million overnight stays. The most visited city was Dubrovnik.
One reason why so many people are traveling to Croatia is because of its expanded flight connectivity. Major transit networks, including United Airlines, have launched direct flights in 2026. The first-ever non-stop flight between the US and Croatia started on April 30, 2026. It operates three times a week, and it’s the only direct US route to Split.
Digital Media is Helping Croatia’s Tourism Industry
Viral international marketing campaigns have also helped Croatia’s tourism. For example, the tourism campaign ‘Croatia – I Hear it’s Beautiful’ features famous actor John Malkovich and football star Luka Modric.
Modern media is highlighting Croatia’s rich history. Snake Island, which is being filmed right now in Croatia, is one example. Another would be The Day of the Jackal. This is a British spy television show that features Eddie Redmayne. Filming locations include the Istrian peninsula, alongside numerous coastal areas.
Game of Thrones also helped to spotlight Croatia. The primary filming destinations included Dubrovnik and Split. People who visit Croatia can walk through the fortress, palace basement, and city gates, as seen in the show
Game of Thrones was so popular that it led to the creation of House of the Dragon, a spin-off series set nearly 200 years before the original series. In iGaming, there’s also a Game of Thrones slot game that can be played at an online casino in the UK. This features graphics like the Iron Throne and shows the scope of modern media’s reach in regard to Croatia’s tourism increase.
Croatia is Quickly Becoming a Top Destination
Croatia’s tourism sector is steadily growing. More people are travelling to the Adriatic coast as it’s scenic. Tourist hotspots like Dubrovnik Old Town are no longer the sole focus, but more inland regions are being explored. Spring and autumn months are seeing major jumps in visitors as people look to avoid summer crowding. Industry leaders are looking to balance high volumes of visitors with sustainability.
Dubrovnik’s transport infrastructure relies on coastal public buses, as well as regional ferries. Right now, Croatia is investing billions in digital updates, transport and energy. European Union funds aim to speed up travel while cutting carbon emissions.
€1.7 billion has been invested in developing rail networks, and €348.5 million has been invested in the Hrvatski Leskovac–Karlovac track. The Istrian Y Motorway is also expanding. Toll booths are being replaced by an electronic system to ensure fast access to major parts of the country, while facilitating more people who want to travel for shorter periods of time.
Improvements like this could spike traffic even more, especially as we move through the second half of 2026.
